How it differs from Singapore

  • 144 tiles: flowers and seasons, but no animals, and the last fourteen tiles of the wall are never drawn.
  • Faan, not tai: a hand needs three faan to go out, and scoring stops at the table’s limit of ten (滿糊).
  • Base points double with each faan, and the table plays half shooter (半銃) or full shooter (全銃).
  • The dealer keeps the deal after winning, and at this table after a drawn hand too; a game is four winds.
  • The flower hands: all eight flowers and seasons (八仙過海), or seven with the eighth claimed (七搶一), are wins on their own.

The regulars at this table

Three of the club’s regulars sit down whenever you open a fresh Hong Kong Old Style table. Each plays the style properly and in their own way; you can change the seats at the table.

  • Uncle Lim Counts every tile

    “Three faan, or you wait.”

  • Mei Always first to ready

“My Hong Kong cousins taught me this one.”

  • Daniel Keeps the results book

“Half shooter or full. I keep a note.”

Rules at this table

Four players, 144 tiles: the three suits, winds and dragons, and eight flowers and seasons. Play moves anticlockwise. Flowers are set aside and replaced from the back of the wall; the last 14 tiles are never drawn.

The aim

Four sets and a pair worth at least 3 faan. A chow is three in a row in one suit (from the player on your left only), a pung three of a kind, a kong four of a kind with a replacement draw. Scoring stops at the limit of 10 faan (滿糊).
