How it differs from Hong Kong

  • 148 tiles: the Hong Kong set plus the four Singapore animals (cat, mouse, rooster and centipede), each worth one tai.
  • Tai, not faan: the usual table needs one tai to go out, and everything is capped at five.
  • Flowers and animals score as they land: a flower that matches your seat is a tai, and four animals, four flowers or four seasons together add one more.
  • Shooter covers all: the player who discards the winning tile gives all three shares, unless the table chooses all three share.
  • Chows from the player on your left, pongs and kongs from anyone, and the dealer and seat winds always marked at the table.

The regulars at this table

Three of the club’s regulars sit down whenever you open a fresh Singapore table. Each plays the style properly and in their own way; you can change the seats at the table.

  • Mei Always first to ready

    “Kopitiam rules, my rules. Pong!”

  • Uncle Lim Counts every tile

“Count the tai. The rest follows.”

  • Auntie Rose Keeps her seat safe

    “The animals are mine, dear.”

Rules at this table

Four players, 148 tiles: the three suits, the winds and dragons, eight flowers and seasons, and the four Singapore animals. Four sets and a pair win, with at least one tai at the usual table; flowers and animals sit beside the hand and score as they land. Tai are added together and capped at five, the tai decide how many points each loser gives, and the shooter covers all three shares unless the table chooses all three share.

Every pattern, the points table and the house rules a table can change are in the scoring guide.
