How it differs from Singapore

  • 136 tiles: no flowers or animals, but three red fives, and a dead wall whose dora indicator adds han to every hand that holds the tile after it.
  • A hand needs a yaku, not a tai: dora add han but are never a yaku on their own.
  • Riichi: a closed ready hand may declare for a thousand-point stick, then discards what it draws until it wins.
  • Furiten: a hand cannot win by discard on any tile it has discarded itself, nor on one it let pass since its last draw.
  • Han and fu make the points; a game is East and South, with the placings counted at the end.

The regulars at this table

Three of the club’s regulars sit down whenever you open a fresh Japanese Riichi table. Each plays the style properly and in their own way; you can change the seats at the table.

  • Daniel Keeps the results book

“Han, fu, counters. All written down.”

  • Mei Always first to ready

“Riichi! Now turn the ura dora.”

  • Rafi The newest regular

“Furiten again? Tell me before I call.”

Rules at this table

Four players, 136 tiles: the three suits, winds and dragons, no flowers, with 3 red fives. The last fourteen tiles are the dead wall: the dora indicator is turned up on it at the start, another after every kong, and the riichi winner turns up the ura dora beneath.

The aim

Four sets and a pair (or seven pairs, or the thirteen orphans) with at least one yaku. Dora add han but are never a yaku on their own. A closed ready hand may declare riichi for a 1,000-point stick: from then on it discards what it draws, and wins with riichi and perhaps ippatsu and ura dora. Furiten: a hand cannot win by discard on any tile it has itself discarded, nor on a tile it let pass since its last draw.

Points

Han and fu give base points (fu × 2han+2); a mangan is 2,000, haneman 3,000, baiman 4,000, sanbaiman 6,000, yakuman 8,000. A discard win takes four times the base (six for the dealer) from the discarder; a self-draw takes twice the base from each (the dealer gives double to a non-dealer winner). Each counter (honba) adds 300; riichi sticks go to the winner. At an exhaustive draw, ready hands collect 3,000 from the others in all.

The deal

The dealer keeps the deal after a win, after a ready hand at a draw and after a redeal; the counter rises on each. Everyone starts with 25,000; a game is East and South, and plays on until someone reaches 30,000, or ends at once when a score falls below zero. Placings add a bonus of 15 and 5 thousand.

Redeals

nine terminals and honours on the first turn · the same wind discarded four times to open · four riichi · four kongs by different players · three players calling ron.
